The developer interview tour for the upcoming WoW: Dragonflight expansioncontinues. This time Lead Combat Designer Brian Holinka was a guest on MrGM's Twitch stream. When asked if there might be some new class-race combinations, the Combat Designer gave a surprising answer.
He can't exactly list all the new class-race cmbos that will be added in Dragonflight, but they definitely want to loosen up a lot in that regard and will make mages, priests, and rogues available to all races. So soon WoW players will be able to play their Tauren as a sneaky rogue and dress in mage robes. What used to be more of a meme will become a reality in the upcoming expansion!
Original answer from Holinka
"Yeah, you know, we kinda have this broad direction. I don't wanna make any huge promises but we kinda feel like we want to move towards a world where the race of a character is not a limiter for what they can or what they can become in the World of Warcraft.
We're working towards that but not all classes have the same kinda content requirements. More of this will come over time, but immediately in 10.0 we're gonna be making Rogues, Mages and Priests available for all races, so everyone will be able to go out and make their sneaky Tauren Rogue tiptoeing on their hooves all around.
These will be introduced in 10.0, with general intentions for us to look at more options down the line, but immediately in 10.0, you'll be able to change your Rogue, Mage and Priest to any race combinations."
Blizzard wants to slowly but surely move in a direction in WoW (buy now ) where the choice of class will not be impossible from the choice of race. However, they won't remove all restrictions directly - the best example of this is probably the extremely limited Dracthyr shouter.
